Making Use Of Computers In All Aspects Of Our Lives Is Usually Taken For Granted, But A Large Amount Of Work Has To Be Carried Out To Create The Software Before The Computer Will Be Able To Do What We Ask It To
For those of us who use computers every day, they are an integral part of our lives that we don’t even question. Even for folk who don’t have one of their own, life is still basically dictated by computers as virtually every organisation on earth utilises them in some way or other.
But in a similar way that most vehicle drivers have no comprehension of what actually takes place in the engine, most computer users don’t usually think about what takes place inside the computer to make it function. Naturally, we can’t know about everything that happens around us, as if that was the case we would be erecting our own houses, carrying out our own dental fillings and Laser eye surgery, steering our own aeroplanes and we would all need to be extremely intelligent to make sense of it all!
All the same, the basics of a computer are comparatively easy to understand, without having to go into a lot of detail. Oddly, the hardware that forms the physical equipment is what is usually thought to be ‘the computer’ but in reality, it is the software we make use of which causes the computer to do what we wish it to do. Without the various software programs we install the computer would simply be a rather dull ornament in the corner of the room, containing a selection of bits of metal, a load of wires and a Laser eye for reading discs.
But every single program that is installed on your computer began life as a thought in someone’s mind, and unless you have been employed in the IT industry, you probably don’t realise how much time and input it needs to create, test and then sell a new piece of software. At the outset, there obviously needs to be demand for the product. A lot of programs are born out of necessity and numerous others we don’t perceive that we have a need for until we engage with them, but each one has to be designed from scratch.
As soon as it has been decided that there is a demand for the program, the team will begin work gathering information about what the program needs to be able to do. At the IT company where I once worked, most new enhancements for the solution came from existing users, but naturally if the software is being designed from scratch, then a little market research amongst possible users will provide for those working on it a notion of how the software is likely to be utilised and what users would need it to be able to do.
Having established what is required, a basic design will be drawn up describing what the program is being written to do. Then an initial plan of how the program will perform is drawn up and eventually the programmers can begin the work designing and building the solution.
As soon as a first version of the program has been written, it can be set up for use and will be extensively tested to get rid of any bugs and to be certain that all of the processes involved interact together as necessary. There will usually be problems at this point, so testing is absolutely vital before giving the software to ordinary users.
For one customised program that I worked on for an account, we went through such extreme testing and retesting that the complete team was spending twelve hours a day on it for several weeks. It really was a question of carrying out every single version of every single process time and time again. When the client eventually started using the program I was attempting to convince my boss that he should be funding Laser eye surgery for every one of us, as we all encountered problems with our eyes through working such stupid hours on the project.
Regardless, once testing has been done to everyone’s satisfaction and any errors have either been resolved, or are considered too insignificant to spend any more time on for this version of the program, the software will be deployed. Depending on the program, this could mean the user downloading an updated version of a program already in use, or installing a brand new program off the shelf. And for bespoke software purchased by a large company, the solution may well be installed remotely by the IT team who can get to all of the work stations inside the business from a central point. This is pretty much a necessity because a business with a large number of employees cannot rely on them all having the same level of computer knowledge. Having a couple of years ago worked with staff who often had problems just booting up their computers each day, and would have absolutely no concept that the program disc would need to be put in the machine so that the beam from the Laser eye can read it, I can certainly comprehend why big business keeps tight control on the installation of and access to new programs.
Once the software is installed and the end users have been trained, the company that developed it will want to carry on maintaining the program. Comments from users are essential as any problem areas will be highlighted and they can then be checked and possibly amended for future updates, plus any requests for additional functionality can be worked on and included in the specifications for the next release.
